How to Make Your Swimwear Last: The Complete Care Guide
By The Swim Edit · April 2026
A £200 bikini should last more than one summer. But most people destroy theirs within weeks by making the same mistakes. Here's how to make your luxury swimwear last years.
Rinse Immediately
After every wear — pool, sea, or hot tub — rinse in cool, fresh water. Chlorine, salt, and sunscreen break down elastic fibres. The longer they sit, the more damage they do. This is the single most important thing you can do.
Never Machine Wash
Hand wash only. Use a tiny amount of gentle detergent (baby shampoo works perfectly). Soak for 10 minutes, gently squeeze — never wring or twist.
Dry Flat, Never Hang
Hanging stretches the fabric and straps. Lay flat on a towel in the shade. Never tumble dry. Never put on a radiator. Direct heat destroys elastane.
Rotate Your Swimwear
Elastic needs 24-48 hours to recover its shape after wearing. If you wear the same bikini every day, it'll lose its stretch. Pack at least 2-3 sets per holiday.
Sunscreen Before Swimwear
Apply sunscreen and let it absorb for 15 minutes before putting on your swimsuit. SPF chemicals (especially avobenzone) cause yellowing and fabric degradation.
Storage
Store flat — not folded, not balled up. Moulded cups should be stored cup-in-cup to keep their shape. Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
