How to Build a Capsule Swimwear Wardrobe
By The Swim Edit · April 2026
You don't need fifteen bikinis. You need five perfect pieces that mix, match, and make you feel incredible every time you reach for them. Here's the formula.
Piece 1: The Black One-Piece
Non-negotiable. Every woman needs a black one-piece that fits like it was made for her body. This is your "throw it on and look instantly polished" piece. Wear it to the beach, pair it with jeans for dinner, or use it as a bodysuit under a blazer. The Hunza G crinkle one-piece or the Bond-Eye Lissio are both outstanding choices.
Piece 2: The Statement Bikini
This is the one that makes people ask "where did you get that?" A bold colour, a beautiful print, or an interesting cut. This is where Zimmermann excels — their printed sets are conversation starters. Frankies Bikinis also does this well at a slightly lower price point.
Piece 3: The Neutral Bikini
Your everyday set. Something in tan, nude, chocolate, or olive that works with your skin tone and pairs with everything. L*SPACE does beautiful neutrals, and Monday Swimwear has mastered the "looks expensive in earth tones" aesthetic.
Piece 4: The Sporty One
For actual swimming, paddleboarding, or beach volleyball. Something that stays put when you move. Seafolly excels here — they've been making functional, beautiful swimwear since 1975 and their sporty pieces genuinely perform.
Piece 5: The Wild Card
A bold colour you wouldn't normally choose. Cherry red. Emerald green. Electric blue. Something that pushes you slightly outside your comfort zone. Bond-Eye's jewel tones are perfect for this — their ribbed neoprene in emerald or cherry is absolutely stunning against sun-kissed skin.
Total investment: roughly £500-900 depending on brands. Cost per wear over three summers? Pennies. And you'll look better than someone who packed twelve fast fashion sets.
