The 5-Piece Capsule Swimwear Wardrobe

By The Swim Edit · May 2026

You don't need fifteen bikinis. You need five pieces that actually work together — pieces you reach for without thinking, that transition from morning swim to sunset cocktails without a wardrobe crisis in between.

Piece 1: The Black One-Piece

Non-negotiable. Every woman needs a black one-piece that makes her feel like a Bond girl. Choose something with a low back or an interesting neckline — square, plunge, or asymmetric. This is your anchor piece. It works for hotel pools, beach clubs, paddleboarding, and thrown under a linen shirt for lunch.

Hunza G does this better than anyone. The crinkle fabric hugs without squeezing and the square neckline is universally flattering.

Piece 2: The Statement Bikini

This is the one for Instagram. Bold print, interesting cut, something that makes you feel dangerously good. Think leopard, tropical, or that burnt orange that looks incredible against tanned skin. Wear it on the beach when you want to turn heads.

Frankies Bikinis nails the effortlessly sexy vibe with prints that photograph beautifully.

Piece 3: The Neutral Bikini

White, cream, nude, or olive. Something clean and minimal that pairs with everything in your suitcase. This is your most-worn piece — the one for actual swimming, for snorkelling, for days when you just want to feel good without trying too hard.

Monday Swimwear does luxurious neutrals with cuts that flatter real bodies.

Piece 4: The Cover-Up

A linen shirt works. So does a crochet dress or a sarong wrap. The key is something sheer enough to still show your swimwear underneath — because you didn't spend £200 on a bikini to hide it under a baggy t-shirt.

Piece 5: The Beach-to-Bar Piece

A high-cut one-piece in a jewel tone — emerald, cobalt, burgundy — that doubles as a bodysuit. Throw on tailored shorts and gold earrings and you're ready for dinner. This is what separates a capsule wardrobe from just owning fewer things.

Melissa Odabash specialises in pieces that don't look like swimwear out of context.

The Rules

Buy quality over quantity. Spend more per piece and buy fewer. Stick to a palette — if everything works in the same tonal family, you can mix tops and bottoms across sets. And for God's sake, hand-wash them. Chlorine and washing machines destroy lycra faster than anything.
