What to Wear to a Beach Wedding
By The Swim Edit · May 2026
A beach wedding is the most beautiful kind of dress code chaos. Too formal and you look ridiculous with sand in your stilettos. Too casual and you look like you are crashing. The sweet spot is breezy elegance — something that moves in the wind, handles humidity, and photographs beautifully against turquoise water.
The Fabric Rule
Linen, silk, chiffon. That is your shortlist. Anything structured or stiff will have you sweating and creasing within the first ten minutes. A silk maxi dress in a warm neutral or soft print is essentially foolproof. It drapes beautifully, catches the breeze, and looks effortlessly expensive.
The Swimwear Underneath Strategy
Here is the secret: wear a bikini or one-piece underneath your outfit. Beach weddings have a way of migrating to the ocean, and you do not want to be the guest sitting out because you are wearing La Perla underneath a dress. A Hunza G one-piece in a nude or matching tone works as both underwear and swimwear.
Shoes: Commit to the Sand
Flat sandals. That is it. Gold flat sandals look beautiful, handle sand, and can be slipped off for the ceremony. Heels on a beach are a comedy sketch, not a fashion choice.
Colour Palette
Avoid white (obviously). Beyond that, lean into the setting. Coral, sage, terracotta, ocean blue and soft gold all photograph beautifully against sand and water. Deep colours — navy, burgundy, emerald — work for sunset ceremonies and look stunning in evening light.
Prints are encouraged. A flowing floral maxi or tropical print feels perfectly appropriate and adds movement to photos.
Accessories
Gold statement earrings are your best friend. They catch the light, frame your face, and elevate any outfit instantly. Skip the delicate necklace — it gets lost in photos. Go bold on the earrings, minimal everywhere else.
A woven clutch in natural rattan or straw looks deliberate without being too casual. Just big enough for your phone, SPF lip balm and a credit card.
