Beach Bag Essentials 2026
By The Swim Edit · May 2026
The perfect beach bag is curated, not crammed. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. No crushed crisps from last summer, no sand-filled hairbrush, no mystery lip gloss that melted in the heat. Just the essentials, chosen with intention.
Sun Protection
SPF 50 facial sunscreen: Non-negotiable. Choose a mineral formula for sensitive skin or a lightweight chemical one for darker skin tones that won't leave a white cast. La Roche-Posay Anthelios remains undefeated.
Body SPF: Go for a spray if you're applying solo — you can actually reach your own back. Soltan Once is affordable and genuinely lasts.
SPF lip balm: Your lips burn too. Sun Bum SPF 30 in coconut tastes like holiday and actually works.
Hair Care
UV hair spray: Sun bleaches and dries hair. A quick spray of UV protectant before you hit the beach saves expensive colour treatments later.
Silk scrunchie: Elastic bands snap wet hair. Silk scrunchies hold without creasing and look chic in a messy bun. Slip silk scrunchies are worth every penny.
The Extras
Waterproof phone pouch: For the pool, the boat, the moments you want to capture without risking a £1,200 phone.
Reusable water bottle: Insulated so it stays cold. Hydration isn't sexy but heatstroke definitely isn't.
Wet bag: For your swimwear after swimming. Stops everything else in your bag getting damp and extends the life of your bikini by not leaving it crumpled and wet.
Good sunglasses: Polarised, UV400, and big enough to cover your whole eye area. This is skincare as much as style — the skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body.
A book: Not your phone. An actual book. Your nervous system will thank you.
The Bag Itself
Straw or raffia for European beaches. A oversized canvas tote for family beach days. A mesh bag for the pool (everything drains, nothing gets mouldy). Whatever you choose, make sure it's big enough to hold a towel and structured enough to stand up on sand without collapsing.
